Rear Clam Shell - Gas Struts

Post by Justin Smith »

The original part number is 85GBA406A10DA with a finis of 9091936.

I think 85GBA relates to a 1985 Ford Granada Scorpio ?

If we are right, then that part had it's own finis code of 1661166 and they are often on ebay.

I know some owners have used new struts from RS Components http://uk.rs-online.com/web/ - Look for part number 234-461 - They were about £50 a pair.

They actually open the tail gate a little higher than the OE items which is a good thing for most people.

They are also variable in that they come fully charged with and are nearly impossible to shut closed, then you leak some gas from a grub screw until you get them strong enough to hold the tail up but not so strong as it bends the bracket when you try and shut it !

Finally, once you let the gas out there is no going back !! - Open a close a few times as they seem to settle down after each re-adjustment else you'll end up buying another pair !

I used Escort MK 5 K reg, They suited mine.

Before that I tried 86' Transit lift up tailgate. Too stiff.

A friend of mine works with gas struts systems and offered to come down and test my car with his adjustable valved gizmo tester version - he can pump them up or down etc, then would cross reference the pressures onto a chart and match some up to a standard production car.

Just need a genuine car to try in out............
